Fed-Ex
Company Profile - South Africa
In the early 90s Sanctions were in force against
South Africa, and South Africa was a
"prohibited country" with no service
provided by FedEx.
In 1991, as
positive political changes were taking place, the
FedEx Corporation was approached by a domestic
express parcel company called XPS which was part of
the Rennies Group in South Africa. FedEx Corporation
saw the opportunity to start providing a service
Southern Africa due to the political changes taking
place, and an increasing demand by their customers
to provide a service to our country.
This soon led to a
business contract where XPS was appointed as A GSP
to offer the FedEx service to its customers in South
Africa and eight other countries in the region. (The
existing network excluding Mauritius).
XPS International
started operations on 1st October 1991. This
division of XPS focused on the FedEx international
service, mainly offering a delivery service on
behalf of FedEx in the region, through a limited
regional network of agents and branches. These
agents were slowly converted to branches to provide
an export and import service to customers. (except
Malawi, which is still an agent)
In 1994 something exciting happened… The Rennies
Group signed a licensee agreement with the FedEx
Corporation that to enable us to trade under the
powerful brand name of FedEx.
This agreement
therefore entitled us to display a 100% FedEx logo
and trade as FedEx in our region. We broke away from
XPS and moved to our own premises where we started
operations as FedEx Southern Africa.
FedEx South Africa
has since expanded its operations by opening
Mauritius as part of the FedEx Southern African
network
Even more
fascinating is how much growth has taken place since
1991. Originally we started out with only 7
employees including our current Managing Director,
Mr. Garry Marshall and Projects Director Ray Exton.
Today Fedex Southern Africa employs over 253 people!
In November 1998
Bidvest, purchased the Rennies Group.
BIDVEST
GROUP
In November 1998 Bidvest, one of the largest
industrial groups on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange
(JSE), purchased the Rennies Group. FedEx in South
Africa originally belonged to the Rennies Group who
signed a GSP agreement with the FedEx Corporation to
trade in Southern Africa. Since then, Bidvest
acquired the Rennies group including FedEx.
Bidvest is made up
of various divisions, categorised according to the
various industries in which they operate. By
referring to the organogram below, you can see that
FedEx belongs to the Bidfreight division of Bidvest.
