IT Diplomas and Short Courses

 

Technikon SA is a distance education tertiary institution enabling prospective students to study in their own time at home.

The National Diploma Information Technology is offered with specialization in the following areas:
  • Business Applications (Mathematics not required)
  • Software Development
  • Web and Applications Development
  • Technical Applications

The minimum recommended study period for the diploma is 3 to 4 years depending on the chosen specialization area.

The diploma will be awarded to the student who has passed 12 subjects of prescribed curriculum.

The diploma consists of the following:

FIRST YEAR: (all subjects in first year are compulsory for all specialization areas)

     - Entrepreneurship and Legal issues when starting your own business

BTECH: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The BTech: Information Technology will be awarded to a student who has passed NINE subjects of the prescribed curriculum. The minimum recommended duration for the degree is two years.

        Below are the subjects available for the degree.

IMPORTANT: Study material for IT subjects forming a part of the BTech is only available on the Internet. This means that you must obtain all material via TSA's virtual campus http://cool.tsa.ac.za. This is not applicable to the subject: Research Methodology and approved non-IT subjects. Students should note that BTech subjects are only available for registration in the 1st and 2nd registration cycles of 2002. This applies to IT subjects only, i.e. the subject: Research Methodology and approved non-IT subjects will still be available for registration in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd registration cycles of 2002.        

COMPULSORY SUBJECTS:

  • Research Methodology
  • Project IV (practical project and research script)

CHOOSE AT LEAST FOUR OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Development Software IV
  • Software Engineering IV
  • Operating Systems IV
  • Networks IV
  • Database Systems IV

CHOOSE THE REST OF THE SUBJECTS FROM BELOW:

  • Computer Security IV
    A maximum of two approved subjects at fourth year level from anther discipline

Admission requirements:
  • A National Diploma: Information Technology or equivalent qualification with Information Systems III and Development Software III/Commercial Programming III or an applicable university degree.
  • An overall average of 60% for the major subjects (Information Systems and Development Software) or equivalent subjects at the third-year level.
  • Employment in an IT-related capacity.
  • Access to the Internet.

  • Applications that do not fall within these parameters will be considered on merit.

    How to enrol:

    Students who want to enrol for the BTech must apply officially for admission from the academic administrative official of the Programme Group: Information Technology. The following documents must be included with your application:

    1. 1)A copy of each of your previously obtained degrees/diplomas. If you are unsure whether your qualifications will be sufficient for admission to the BTech degree, also include copies of certificates for all training courses/seminars/workshops related to the IT discipline that you attended.
    2. An academic record for each qualification obtained.
    3. A concise curriculum vitae. Please supply sufficient details of current and previous employment.
    4. The completed application form included at the back of the yearbook (available on TSA's web site).
    Technikon SA will not necessarily admit all students for the degree programme and may require the student to complete more subjects if the student's previous qualifications and/or results are considered inadequate for the BTech degree programme.

    SHORT COURSES

    The Information Technology Programme Group also offers distance education programmes in Industry-accredited programmes, such as the A+, Net+, MCSD, MCSE, Microsoft Office User Specialist (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook), Visual Basic 6, etc. Following are details in this regard.     Type of short course:
    Part-time or distance learning

    Types of course material / support provided:

  • Manual(s)
  • CDs containing video clips, exam test questions, NEXTSim job simulations, etc.
  • Stiffy (applicable to MOUS course)

    Prerequisites:
    No prerequisite is necessary, e.g. matric. However, guidelines are given in some instances, for example: before attempting MCSE it would be a good idea to have passed A+ certification as well as Net+ certification. A PC with a CD-ROM drive.

    Method of study
    Student works through the manuals, in conjunction with the CD or stiffy.

    Starting time and duration:
    The student starts the course when he/she feels ready. The duration of the courses will depend on the individual. If the student feels that he/she is ready to write the examination after a month, he/she will be allowed to do so.

    Examination:
    The examination can take place at any Sylvan Prometric Testing Centre. Technikon SA's Prometric Testing Centre is only available at the Florida campus. The prices of the examination ARE NOT INCLUDED in the price of the short course. The prices of the examination will vary from centre to centre and from course to course.

    Courses:
A+ Technical course - concerns the "insides" of the computer. After doing the A+ certification examination, you should be able to fix, upgrade or build a PC as well as install and fix software on a PC
Net+ Also known as Network+. This course covers the generic networking principles, e.g. the network system world wide is based on the TCP/IP protocols, etc.
MOUS Microsoft Office User Specialist - consists of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Perfect for administrative and secretarial employees.
MCSE Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
MCDBA Microsoft Certified Database Administrator
Novell CNE Novell Certified Network Engineer

You may select the level most applicable to you. For example if you are proficient in Word, you might be interested in Word Advanced, but if you have no knowledge of PowerPoint, you may choose PowerPoint Beginners level.
